Bringing the Voice of Rural Communities to the Forest Carbon Table

At the end of February, EcoLogic, together with Mexican collaborators AMBIO, Pronatura Sur, and ECOSUR, organized a workshop in Chiapas to present and analyze different forest monitoring platforms being developed in Mexico, bringing together a number of experts from Mexico, the US, Finland, and the UK, with stakeholders from 8 different Mexican states.

The workshop, made possible thanks to funding from the Governors’ Climate and Forest Fund (GCFF), the UK Space Agency, Ecometrica, and GCF Taskforce, was a significant milestone on the road to developing an effective, collaborative forest monitoring system that allows public sector stakeholders, state governments in particular, as well as local citizens to actively participate in generating information about the status and value of their forests.

Ultimately, EcoLogic aims to ensure that the local people living in and around carbon-rich forests in Mexico are at the helm of stewarding and benefiting from those forests. By enhancing local knowledge and participation in forest carbon monitoring techniques, we promote sustainable forest stewardship and better advocacy for forest communities to benefit from environmental reward programs.
